I’m officially obsessed with Basic Overnight Steel-Cut Oats. Like, can’t-go-a-morning-without-this obsessed. Like, might-cry-into-my-bowl-once-it’s-empty obsessed. Why? Because they’re EASY and chewy and satisfying without added sugar and with plenty of protein and fiber.

So normally I eat eggs for breakfast. By normally, I mean almost every day because they are delicious and because they are a good source of protein and because they keep me full until lunchtime. But eggs are now the stuff of Breakfasts Past and now I’m all about the Basic Overnight Steel-Cut Oats.

Mom used to make this all the time when I was little. Cold summer pizza. It’s probably a recipe that started on the side of a Pillsbury package, but I have a photocopy of a years old handwritten recipe card.

It’s unmistakably Mom’s handwriting. Isn’t it funny how we come to recognize these little things and find a second of comfort in them? Mom’s handwriting, familiar stationery with worn edges, memories of sitting on bar stools, picking the radishes out my lunch. So arbitrary and yet heart-warming.

I’ve been writing and deleting for almost an hour now. What’s the problem? It’s that I’m trying to make okra exciting.

Personally, I get really excited about okra.

But it’s really not that exciting. It’s a vegetable. It’s green. It’s slimy. A lot of people don’t like hate it. It’s either breaded and fried, like most Southern vegetables. Or stewed with tomatoes, like a lot of other Southern vegetables. It’s not super versatile.

This is the first post on my personal domain! I have no clue what I’m doing (as you can probably see from the current layout quirks). Naive me — I was shocked to find out that it’s really difficult to run your own site. “They” recommend that I hire someone to do all of this for me, but it’s very expensive. And now I know why. But hopefully, you’ll see this site becoming more personalized each time you visit.

And so, here’s a recipe and a post simply so I can take a break from my tech-heavy day. 🙂
