Food Fails of 2014

While every other successful blogger is putting together lists of Best-Loved and Favorite Recipes of 2014, I thought I would put together a list of food and photo fails. There. were. so. many.

I’m a new blogger.

I’m a new photographer.

I still know nothing about food styling.

I’m only beginning to play around in the kitchen, creating my own recipes.

So with that in mind, I’m hoping this little exercise will be uplifting (look how far I’ve come!) rather than self-deprecating (such a long way left to go!).

1. Rocky Road Fudge Bars

That pic at the top? It’s published. So is this one, friends. That was my first ever blog post back in June. And let me tell you a little something. It was very, very hard to hit the Publish button back then. Me… putting myself out there… people reading my rambling thoughts…?! Honestly, I should have been more concerned about people looking at the AWFUL PHOTOS I TOOK.

2. All those photos I took before I learned about natural lighting…

These, friends, are also all published on the blog. What kills me, just KILLS me, is that they all tasted delicious. And they all looked good in person. I just couldn’t figure out how to translate it into a photo! Maybe in 2015, as a week-long blog project, I’ll re-make all of these photo fails, this time getting the photos RIGHT. I don’t want you to miss out on good food just because I have no clue about how to use a camera.

3. Jalapeño-Lime Tequila Ribs

The sad thing here is that I KNEW about outdoor lighting and yet, I chose to take this photo indoors. It falls under the category: Things I Know I Should Do, But Don’t Do Anyway.  For example, I know to set the oven timer for 10 minutes less than a recipe says and to periodically check on the food until it’s done, but I still burn things. I have learned my lesson countless times… why doesn’t it stick??

4. My first attempt at food styling with Lemon Sunshine Cookies

Just… lovely. Why wouldn’t you pair slightly burnt lemon cookies with some flowers you found in your front yard? Need I say more?

5. “Rustic” Pear-Upside Down Cake

It’s just… not what I wanted it to be. It tasted right — one of my only attempts at making a “lightened up” dessert — I just wasn’t thrilled with how it photographed. It’s not very pretty. I want to make pretty things. Especially if they are going to be healthy — then they better freakin’ be pretty!

So those are my Food Fails of 2014. I vow to take photos of all my food failures in 2015, so we can have a good laugh at my expense again next year.

On a positive note, here are some blog stats from the last seven months. MyBottomlessBoyfriend is growing!!
